A grant is funding you do not repay. Most business grants in Canada are cost-shared — the funder covers a percentage of eligible project costs, commonly between 25% and 80%, and you carry the rest — and most are paid on claims: you spend first, then invoice the funder against approved costs.
Those mechanics shape eligibility. Granting programs look for a defined project with a start and an end, costs that have not yet been incurred, and an applicant who can cash-flow the work between claims. Retroactive costs are almost never eligible, which is why the closing dates on this page matter more than they do for tax credits.
Grants stack with the rest of the system: the same project can carry a grant on top of a wage subsidy or a refundable credit, provided total public support stays inside each program’s stacking limits.
